Out of the Woodwork (OOTW) Design Studio & Workshop was started by Alex Fitter and Louis Eastman. Both trained as traditional cabinetmakers and began their working relationship by setting up a studio and workshop in South Bristol.
The team now work with architectural design and interiors. Creating not only furniture but also a wealth of handcrafted pieces from speakers to custom steelwork. The pairs distinctive style and eye for detail, has provided them with an impressive portfolio that includes many of Bristol’s best independent bars and restaurants.
This year OOTW has been working busily to develop their first furniture range Birch and is the starting point into the realms of design led small batch furniture.
Alex graduated from Exeter University with a degree in Archaeology in 2008.
After spending a couple of years teaching surfing in Cornwall, he decided he wanted to find a new path. Initially enrolling on a 2 month woodworking course at The Boat Building Academy, Lyme Regis he decided that becoming a cabinet maker was the way forward. In 2009, he joined Chris Faulkner for a year at his fine furniture school in South Devon.
Having moved to Bristol in 2011, Alex met Louis and started Vale Lane Workshop. Having spent 2 years working on solo projects; an opportunity arose to work together. From there OOTW came into being.
Louis Eastman graduated with a Bachelors degree in Industrial Design in 2008, after some worldly travelling settled back into his hometown Bristol.
Whilst away he came back with many sketchbooks full of furniture designs, and embarked on a three year City & Guilds Furniture making course. Soon after he founded Vale Lane Workshop CIC with OOTW’s co-founder Alex Fitter.
Louis has always had a keen interested in design, furniture and architecture.
